The Newborn Screening section of the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa (SHL) is upgrading to a new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), OpenELIS, beginning October 1, 2024. The transition to the new LIMS will include significant upgrades to existing SHL tools, including changes to test reports and improved web portal functionalities. In order to prepare users for the new LIMS implementation, SHL will be providing the following:
- Users from the four states who access the current web portal – Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska - will have their accounts automatically migrated to the new OpenELIS Web Portal.
- Example results reports and EMR results specifications for current and new conditions can be found below.
- Links to recorded trainings and a user guide with instructions for web portal use can be found below.
- SHL will be providing web-based training via Zoom for web portal users (primary care providers, hospital, clinic, and midwifery staff) on September 18, 2024, at 2:00 PM CT. Register Here
- SHL will be providing web-based training via Zoom for web portal users (medical consultants and geneticists) in September. An email invitation will be coming soon.
- Newborn Screening sample collection procedures, the dried blood spot collection cards, and their transportation to SHL will not change.
We are confident that this upgrade will provide our partners with improved ability to receive and evaluate newborn screening reports. Thank you for your cooperation and dedication during this transition period.
Thank you,
Kenneth Coursey
