Diagnostic and Clinical Division at SHL

The Diagnostic and Clinical Division (DCD) provides reference and diagnostic testing services for communicable diseases of public health significance to protect the citizens of Iowa. DCD testing supports numerous state and federal surveillance programs for antimicrobial resistance, health care acquired infections, respiratory pathogens, enteric pathogens and sexually transmitted diseases.

DCD also performs newborn screening for genetic disorders and maternal screening for fetal development. DCD staff actively participate in epidemiologic investigations of food-borne and other infectious disease outbreaks, provide consultation for laboratory test interpretation and use, and quickly responds to emergencies such as biothreat incidents, natural disasters, and disease outbreaks.

Iowa Laboratory Response Network (ILRN)

The Iowa Laboratory Response Network (ILRN) is Iowa’s statewide network of sentinel-level clinical laboratories that serve the LRN.

The State Hygienic Laboratory serves as Iowa’s reference-level laboratory. In this role, SHL is responsible for investigating and/or referring specimens to National Laboratories. SHL also maintains the ILRN by providing training and guidance to sentinel laboratories throughout Iowa.

How can lab staff join the ILRN distribution list?

The ILRN distribution list is managed through our CRM. The information provided to list members contains items of clinical and public health significance, such as microbiology topics, training opportunities and preparedness activities, not just those associated with the potential agents of bioterrorism.
