The State Hygienic Laboratory maintains high-level capabilities to test for chemical, biological, and radiological threats to the public health and in the environment. This emergency response testing is performed on samples collected during emergency events as well as some infectious agents detected in clinical diagnostic labs that fall outside the scope of routine testing services.  These samples are analyzed by staff who have received advanced training in technical analysis, quality, security and safety. Emergency response testing results assist healthcare professionals, first responders, and public health officials to quickly identify and respond to emergency situations, thereby protecting the health and safety of Iowans.  SHL partners with many emergency preparedness and response agencies throughout Iowa to maintain a constant state of readiness in the unlikely scenario of a chemical, biological, or radiological event.

First responders needing to submit a sample for Credible Threat Testing must first notify the SHL BT/CT Coordinators at 319-325-0766.  Complete the Credible Threat Sample Submission form and submit it to SHL with your sample(s).
