Molecular/Virology at SHL

The State Hygienic Laboratory is CLIA accredited to perform numerous molecular testing methods to detect the presence of a variety of infectious diseases in support of statewide surveillance programs and epidemiological investigations. 

Testing Methods and Expertise

Testing methods and expertise include: 

  • Influenza/SARS-CoV-2 virus surveillance, testing, data reporting, and outbreak investigation.   
  • Nucleic acid amplification testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Mycoplasma genitalium in support of the Iowa Community-Based Screening Services (CBSS) program 
  • Nucleic acid amplification testing for viral and bacterial infections 
  • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis of clinical and environmental specimens in support of epidemiological studies and outbreak investigations
