Prenatal Laboratory Testing at SHL
The State Hygienic Laboratory is CLIA accredited to perform prenatal testing to provide additional information about the health of a baby/pregnancy and to optimize neonatal outcomes. SHL partners with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, for provider consultation, genetic counseling, and follow-up services.
- Screening tests may identify increased risk for having a baby with Down syndrome, Trisomy 18 and neural tube defects.
- The screening can be done in two stages. The first is during the first trimester of pregnancy and involves an ultrasound and a blood sample, while the second is done between 15 – 20 weeks of pregnancy and involves another blood sample.
- Neural tube screening is performed durning the second trimester and involves a blood draw.
