Contaminated raw milk sold in four states

For the second time in three months, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people who might have consumed contaminated raw milk and milk products to visit their doctor. People who bought and drank raw milk from a company called Udder Milk may have been infected with a rare but potentially serious germ called Brucella abortus RB51.

State and federal agencies team to fight Listeria

Concern about the possible occurrence of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in Iowa’s retail food establishments prompted a team effort by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (IDIA), local health departments and the State Hygienic Laboratory to evaluate an onsite test for the bacteria.

50 communities receive CDC fluoridation award

Fifty Iowa communities received the CDC’s Water Fluoridation Quality Award for maintaining fluoridation levels in public water systems, the Iowa Department of Public Health announced on Nov. 20. Of these, Muscatine Power and Water, Northwood Water Works, and Waterloo Water Works received the 50 Year Award for maintaining continuous community water fluoridation from 1966-2016.

Zebra mussels found in Big Spirit Lake

The battle against the invasive zebra mussels took another turn on Sept. 23 when a juvenile mussel was found attached to a rock in the southwest side of Big Spirit Lake in northwestern Iowa.
