Update to rabies testing process

Update to rabies testing process
January 19, 2023 -- As a part The State Hygienic Laboratory’s mission to provide objective, timely information to help keep Iowans safe and healthy, the lab provides rabies testing services at its Coralville laboratory.

In order to obtain rabies testing of an animal specimen, individuals should follow the specimen collection and shipping instructions available on the SHL’s website.

A completed rabies test request form must accompany the specimen to ensure proper identification and tracking. If human exposure occurred, regulatory agencies and the State Hygienic Lab require the name/age of persons who were exposed, and the name and contact details for a veterinarian, physician, or public health practitioner. In cases of human exposure, there are no fees incurred by the individual requesting the test.

Starting on February 1, 2023, when a specimen is submitted and there is no human exposure, the requester will be billed $25.00 after the test is complete.

Questions about specimen collection and shipping may be directed to shl-ask-shl@iowa.uiowa.edu .
