Measles Testing Guidance

measles virusIf measles is suspected, IMMEDIATELY call IDPH at 800-362-2736; or after hours call 515-323-4360. State epidemiology personnel will advise on the appropriate testing to be ordered and specimen transport to the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL). Currently, two different tests are available: serology testing for measles virus IgG and/or IgM and real time PCR for measles. Serology testing is performed at SHL. PCR is sent out to a CDC regional reference laboratory.

Blood Specimen for Serologic Testing

Serology-collection for adults, 4 to 6 ml of blood in a red top or serum separator tube (SST), for infants, 2 to 3 ml of blood in a red top or serum separator tube (SST). Send to SHL on a cold pack, (not frozen) with a completed Serology test request form.

Throat Swab for RT-PCR

Rub the tonsils and posterior pharynx with Dacron-tipped plastic swab. Place the swab in tube containing M4 transport medium provided. The transport medium is kept cold and should be sent on a cold pack. Specimens received at SHL will be sent to a CDC regional reference laboratory for testing as appropriate. Please submit a completed Viral and Bacterial PCR and DFA test request form and write in "PCR for measles."
