Hy-Vee recalls cheesecake linked to Salmonella
Jan. 16, 2019 -- Hy-Vee is recalling 32 varieties of cheesecake sold in its eight-state region because of possible Salmonella contamination. The supermarket chain announced on Jan. 4 that the recall includes cheesecake sold in 8-ounce and 32-ounce plastic containers with a best-if-used by date from Dec. 6, 2018 to Jan. 11, 2019.

The products were distributed to 117 of Hy-Vee’s 249 grocery stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The cheesecake was made with a mix produced by Diamond Crystal Brands, which notified Hy-Vee of the possible contamination. The supplier is based in Savannah, Ga., and operates a total of five production facilities in California, Georgia and Iowa.

In its announcement, Hy-Vee provided a list of recalled varieties, UPC codes and images of the labels.

“Customers who purchased any of these products should dispose of them or return them to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund,” the grocer advised. “Consumers with questions may contact Hy-Vee Customer Care representatives 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-772-4098.”

Recalled varieties include cherry; chocolate bettercreme; flag-decorated; fluff; lemon bettercreme; mint and mint chip bettercreme; Oreo, Oreo bettercreme and golden Oreo bettercreme; pumpkin and pumpkin bettercreme; sea salted caramel bettercreme; s’mores bettercreme; strawberry and strawberry bettercreme; and turtle.

Sallmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours after infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infections usually last between four to seven days, but can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
