Awareness week celebrates a precious resource
“National Groundwater Awareness week is a time that our community should recognize and celebrate,” said Susie Dai, Environmental Health Division director for the State Hygienic Laboratory. “Clean groundwater is one of the most precious resources that our society has. Over the past years, the State Hygienic Laboratory has worked with various federal and state agencies, and our community to protect groundwater.”
An estimated 288,000 Iowans receive their drinking water from private wells. The State Hygienic Laboratory recommends that private well owners perform regular well maintenance and test their water each year for nitrates and coliform bacteria, including E.coli. In addition to these tests, the State Hygienic Laboratory can detect arsenic, mercury and many other contaminants in water.
